Understand what controls a NYC knob and tube replacement schedule, from investigation and access through outages, inspections and finish repairs.

The number of days electricians are on site is only part of the answer. Before that work can start, someone may need to trace the old circuits or arrange access to another part of the building. After installation, inspections and finish repairs can still remain.

[NYC Knob & Tube Experts](https://nycknobandtube.com/) plans replacement around those dependencies. We do not offer a universal completion time for a property we have not assessed. A useful schedule explains what has to happen before the next stage can begin, so you can see which dates are firm and which still depend on a decision.

## Ask what the quoted duration actually measures

“About a week” could mean a week of electrical installation once every prerequisite is ready. It may exclude the assessment, building authorization and plaster restoration. That can be a workable estimate, but it is different from having a finished home a week after your first call.

Have the contractor identify the start and end of the period being quoted. If the end is “electrical installation complete,” ask what happens afterward. The date you can repaint a room may differ from the date the required electrical closeout is recorded.

It also helps to separate elapsed time from working time. A project with several short visits can occupy a longer calendar period than the total hours suggest. That matters when you are arranging accommodation or coordinating another trade.

## Before installation: turn the finding into a job

An inspection report may establish that K&T is present without identifying every active branch. Further tracing can be necessary before the replacement can be priced and scheduled with confidence.

Access is part of that investigation. If the route leaves an apartment, permission to enter the shared area or adjacent space may be needed. A contractor cannot resolve that dependency simply by reserving a start date.

Send existing reports when you first inquire. Explain any previous refusal too. If another electrician declined because the job required access that was unavailable, that problem still needs an answer. Finding a willing replacement contractor moves things forward, but it does not make a concealed route accessible by itself.

## The installation plan sets the pace

The length of the wiring is not the only measure of effort. Reaching a ceiling connection through finished rooms can involve more coordination than a longer run through exposed framing. The contractor needs to allow for the actual access method.

Occupied work also has its own sequence. An electrician may need to complete and check one portion before the next can be disconnected. Those stopping points follow the circuits, which may not line up neatly with the bedrooms or floors you hoped to tackle in order.

A separate panel or service upgrade can add another dependency. If utility involvement is needed, it should be shown in the schedule rather than treated as part of the ordinary branch-circuit work. Not every K&T replacement includes a service change.

## Put the dependencies on one schedule

| Stage | Question that makes the timing clearer |
| --- | --- |
| Assessment | Has enough of the installation been established to plan the work? |
| Authorization | Are required owner and building permissions in place? |
| Filing and preparation | What must the responsible contractor complete before work begins? |
| Installation | Which areas will be affected on each working day? |
| Electrical checks and inspections | What needs to remain accessible, and what happens if corrections are required? |
| Restoration | When can the finishing trade start and what does its duration include? |
| Closeout | Which completion records remain outstanding after the last site visit? |

This is not a mandatory seven-stage sequence for every job. Some tasks can overlap. It is a way to identify the assumptions behind the date you have been given.

## What can change after work begins?

Concealed conditions are one possibility. A circuit may continue beyond the route established during the first visit, or an expected access path may be obstructed. The contractor should explain the finding and the effect of the proposed response.

Changes requested by the owner can matter too. Moving a device or adding an appliance circuit after routes have been agreed may require more work than the first schedule allowed. Raise intended layout changes before installation wherever possible.

Not every delay means the electrical work has gone wrong. A required inspection or another trade’s availability may determine when an opening can be closed. What matters is receiving a clear update that identifies the dependency, rather than an unexplained new finish date.

## Building working hours are part of the estimate

An apartment building may limit when noisy work can occur or when shared spaces can be used. The contractor needs the current rules before planning each day. Do not assume a weekend can automatically recover time lost during the week.

Scheduled electrical construction before 7 a.m., after 6 p.m., or on Saturday or Sunday requires a NYC After Hours Variance. Approval is separate from any stricter building rules, and should not be assumed. [NYC DOB electrical after-hours advisory](https://www.nyc.gov/assets/buildings/construction_advisories/ca-elecahv.pdf).

Where a project is being phased over a long period, the responsible contractor also needs to address the validity of the electrical permit. An old permit document is not proof that a paused project can restart unchanged.

## Working toward a purchase or insurance deadline

Provide the actual deadline before relying on a proposed date. The required endpoint may be more demanding than “electricians finished.” An insurer may want evidence that specified old wiring was retired. A transaction may require records that are still pending after installation.

Ask which remaining steps are outside the contractor’s direct scheduling control. That makes it easier to assess whether there is room for a correction or a rescheduled inspection. Do not treat an early estimate as a guarantee that a third party will accept the work by its deadline.

For the owner, the most useful schedule answers an everyday question: what can I plan around now? [Discuss your whole-house rewire](https://nycknobandtube.com/whole-house-rewiring-nyc/) with any fixed dates attached. We can work through what needs establishing before those dates become realistic commitments.

Have a date you need to work toward?

Send the deadline with the inspection finding. Tell us what must be complete by then, especially if someone else needs to accept the records.

## Questions that come up

### Can you give a reliable duration from the square footage alone?

Floor area provides context, but it does not establish the circuit routes or access difficulty. A useful duration also depends on the extent of replacement and the conditions under which the work can be performed.

### Is the project finished when power is back on?

Not necessarily. Required inspections, project closeout or finish repairs may still be outstanding. Ask the contractor to distinguish the return of power from the completion of the entire agreed job.

### Can work continue over a weekend to meet a deadline?

Scheduled weekend electrical construction requires a NYC After Hours Variance, and the building may impose additional restrictions. Confirm the approved arrangements before relying on a weekend to recover time.
